The thing about Africa is, it’s hot. From 11am to 5pm you’re pretty much stuck sprawled on the bed soaking your sheets in sweat too weak to even fan yourself. The upside of this, though, is that I have caught up on some excellent reading. Since literature has been a pretty substantial part of my life here I thought I’d share some of my favorites.

The Trouble with Africa, Darling, and Poisonwood Bible are especially recommended for those of you interested in knowing what my experience has been like and understanding some of the problems this continent faces. Add Catch 22 to that list.
And, here are some books that are ridiculously overrated. I actually got mad reading some of them they were so bad. I’m sure many of you might not agree with me, but I have my reasons.

agreed- from John D.
It's so nice knowing someone who has read Shogun. I'm not saying that I have read it, or even opened it, or ever will open it. But it is still nice. I am very happy to see that we agree on several good books, but I am ESPECIALLY happy to see that you think Motorcycle is terrible. Because it is. I didn't have the stomach to finish it, but I read enough of it to hate it. I think I bought it at your parents' store, POSITIVE that I would love it. I was obviously incorrect in that assessment. My grandomther gave me the Tehran book, and I told her I would read it when she read Lolita. So far neither one of us has held up our end. I think I am going to start East of Eden soon because it is winter (although it doesn't feel like it) and because my brother is planning on reading it, and I hate it when he reads anything before I do. I really want to read Middlesex, as I have heard nothing but good things.
